Loughborough University & Caterpillar team up for innovative technologies

Loughborough University, a renowned public university in Loughborough, England and Caterpillar, world's largest construction-equipment manufacturer, have officially agreed to continue a strategic collaboration that was first introduced 25 years ago.

This new partnership will involve the acceleration of innovative technologies within the off-highway powertrain sector.

For the unversed, the collaboration, which began in the late 90s, resulted in the construction of IRC (Innovation and Research Centre) on the University campus,  with well-established expertise and facilities in the development of  engine subsystems, engines, and hybrid powertrain systems.

The IRC conducts and offers research to address important questions, by developing and discovering new engineering processes and components used worldwide by Caterpillar and its global supply chain.

Through the years, many of the IRC’s projects have received international academic admiration for delivering business value as well as a significant social and economic impact.

These projects span domains like thermal management, control, after treatment and, more recently, hybridization, data analytics, materials, and digitization.

Professor for Thermo-fluid Mechanics, Loughborough University & Director of the Innovation and Research Centre, Adrian Spencer, mentioned that Loughborough and Caterpillar are devoted to offering solutions for a more sustainable future to facilitate a comprehensive and diverse workforce.

Spencer further revealed that through IRC, the team will push the boundaries of research and innovation in order to keep up with the rapidly changing heavy-duty vehicles sector, over the next five years. Caterpillar Vice President and General Manager, David Goldspink highlighted the great work that the Loughborough University and the Caterpillar teams have accomplished.

David also stated that the firm looks forward to this collaboration to ensure that the cooperative relationship between outstanding technical research and emerging talent lasts for a long time.

As per reports, the Caterpillar and Loughborough collaboration will positively impact the availability of industrial skills as all engineers will receive invaluable professional development via customized courses.

Apparently, a greater number of U.K.-based graduates from Loughborough will now also get hired than any other university.
