Kyocera & BYD Japan collaborate on energy systems for electric vehicles

Kyocera corporation, a Japan-based electronics manufacturer recently announced a joint venture with the Japanese arm of China’s BYD Company, a leading producer of electric vehicles.

The companies will be collaborating on a joint project to develop renewable supply-demand energy system for electric vehicles. Kyocera’s solar power generating system’s renewable energy, combined with electric buses of BYD will maximize the efficiency of renewable energy, reduce power losses & maintain stable supply-demand energy balance, cites source.

Reportedly, Kyocera will develop energy charge management system for the project. The system will control the supply and demand balance between energy consumption & production by using aggregation technology developed during VPP (Virtual Power Plant) test projects over several past years. Kyocera’s renewable energy generating system will also be incorporated in this energy charge management system.

BYD will supply 2 variants of electric buses- a large electric bus which is already available in the global markets & a compact electric bus, specially developed for the Japanese market which is expected to be available by 2020. BYD will use insights from energy consumers & its technological proficiency in developing electric buses for the project.

In confirming the efficiency of supply & demand integrated energy system for electric buses, Kyocera will also verify potential of other renewable energy applications, such as independent power systems for transportation, residential & shared ride services in collaboration with transmission and distribution system operators, local communities & power retailers.

As per reliable sources, the company aims at demonstrating this energy system for electric vehicles in 2020 with plans of bringing it to market in 2021, after incorporating key findings from BYD collaboration.

For the record, after the Paris Agreement of 2015, countries & private enterprises have been working to develop modern solutions to tackle global climate change. Automobiles are major contributors to global pollution due to CO₂ emission and it becomes important to improve their energy efficiency. In Japan, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has encouraged use of various forms of EVs, which aim at reducing greenhouse gas emission by 80%, per vehicle & 90% per passenger vehicle from levels of 2010 to levels in 2050.
