WhatsApp announces plans to launch calling support to web version

The social media giant Facebook Inc. has reportedly announced plans to integrate a new feature into WhatsApp that will enable users to make audio and video calls on its desktop version. The instant messaging app has been working on this new feature for quite some time.

Sources cite that the company’s move to roll out this new feature would put WhatsApp on par with Google Meet and Zoom. However, it is unclear if the instant massaging app has ambitions to compete with these two companies in the enterprise space. The company has already introduced the feature to few desktop users for trial purposes in time for the holiday season.

WhatsApp audio and video call support for the desktop version was spotted in the 2.2043.7 beta update. A window will be displayed if users receive audio and video calls on WhatsApp Web. Users can decline or accept the incoming call. As for when a user makes a call, the app will display a smaller window that will include the status of the call.

Although 2020 has been a static year for most, social messaging platform WhatsApp has launched some major updates. Some features significantly improved the messaging experience while others launched completely new use cases for the app.

Recently, the instant messaging platform launched a new UPI-based payment feature in India, which is now available for 20 million users. The company also announced plans to roll out pension products and micro-insurance products in India by end of 2020.

WhatsApp will partner with SBI General Insurance for cost-efficient health insurance coverage. Users can also use this platform to avail saving as well as retirement schemes. The previous will be introduced in partnership with pinBox solutions and HDFC Pension.
