Rio Tinto opens vaccination hub at Perth Airport for mining industry

Rio Tinto has reportedly opened vaccination clinics at Perth Airport, which will enable FIFO (fly-in fly-out) workers from the mining industry to get COVID-19 vaccination when they land in Perth. The global mining group partnered with the Department of Health of Western Australia to establish the new clinics, which will operate at T2 and T3 of Perth Airport and are particularly designed to enable access for FIFO workers from the resources sector traveling through the Airport.

The clinics are part of the group’s commitment to helping boost the rate of vaccination across the State. Rio Tinto has opened the facility to vaccinate workers in the mining FIFO community, irrespective of the company they are associated with.

The clinic opening comes along the heels of the Western Australian Government announcing that it is mandatory for FIFO and other employees of the resources sector to get vaccinated. Additionally, the mining group announced that its entire WA workforce is required to be vaccinated, which includes people working in offices and other facilities in Perth.

The vaccination clinics will operate from 10 am to 8 pm on weekdays with appointment times in sync with the flight arrival times. Bookings are crucial for avoiding delays and daily walk-ins are limited based on the availability of the vaccine.

Simon Trott, the Iron Ore Chief Executive at Rio Tinto, encouraged all qualified FIFO workers from across the industry returning to Perth to reserve an appointment as soon as possible. He stated that the group is prompting workers from the sector to take benefit of the Airport clinics, which are open to all FIFO workers.

Rio Tinto understands the importance of boosting vaccination rates in Western Australia and is delighted to welcome workers to the clinics, said Trott.

Rio Tinto unveiled vaccination clinics in Paraburdoo and Tom Price in September and is collaborating with the WA administration to set up similar clinics in Pannawonica, Dampier, and Cape Lambert to assist with the rollout of the vaccination.
